Hundreds flying low around the meadow

Flying around about 3' up and bumbling around slowly so it was easy to catch. Incidentally it was raining.

The residents here say they are very common.

I pruned the fruiting stalk off of a Penstemon spectabilis and the next day found this insect hollowing it out. All it ever showed me of itself is what you see in the photos.

Mating on top of some other random beetle?
