A muddy watersnake, this was my first encounter with a snake that had emerged from its hibernaculum. I didn't even realize it was just dirty, I thought it was a completely different species until it was pointed out to me that most snakes looks like this when they emerge from overwintering. Crazy!

I thought these were still Westerns, I'm only familiar with Kansas herps. Websites associated with Utah should be much more careful with their nomenclature, everything I saw said this was still Ambystoma tigrinum

I caught this little guy late one evening and held him over night because letting him go that late I was worried he would get killed and eaten and the release wouldn’t be safe.
