Description

Snorkeling along the jetty and around the beach at South Pointe with Gonzalo, Benjamin and Jasmine. Visibility was excellent closer to shore but wasn't so great further out. The water just seemed a bit hazy/smoky/foggy (not sure how else to describe it) as we got to around 10ft+ depth swimming east along the jetty. We swam about 250m, a little less than halfway down the jetty, before turning around. There was a full moon and we were swimming during slack high tide according to tides4fishing.com. Winds have been out of the South for the past several days and there was little sargassum on the beach.

Highlights were a small electric ray and gulf flounder on the sandy bottom. Jasmine unfortunately got stung by one of the little jellyfish that come out at night (this one: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/123714438 )
but thankfully the sting wasn't too bad.

Description

Snorkeling near the beginning of the South Pointe jetty at night. This was my first time ever snorkeling at night so I was a little apprehensive but never ventured too deep and stayed pretty close to the rocks, especially when I was by myself. I was joined by two of my former students, Ben and Jasmine a little later and Ben spotted a pretty big spider crab.

We had two underwater spotlights, one rated to 3,000 lumens and the other to 1,000 lumens. I only used the 3,000 lumens light on the lowest setting, which is apparently only 400 lumens. It was plenty of light and we felt very safe out here although we were extremely prudent and careful. It was fairly windy, around 8 knots so there were some waves. I really wanted to look for tiny stuff on the jetty but it was hard to focus with the waves pushing me around near the rocks.

The coolest sighting of the night was a hawksbill sea turtle, which swam right up to me. I wish it would've made an appearance when Ben and Jasmine were there! Maybe next time... Hawksbill observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/121842968

need some help with ID. Had it as Sheepshead porgy but now am being told it is Whitebone Porgy.

I will stick with Sheepshead. That's what I had it as. The shape of the head and parituclarly the mouth are similar to the Sheepshead. Thanks for the help!
