Field Notes - ~12pm, hot & sunny
Lots and lots of cormorants resting on the shore amongst a few pelicans. However, most flew away as I got a bit closer. None of the pelicans or gulls flew away.
Was observed floating on surface of river and diving down
They were like a water ballet group today. I am posting because there were only a few birds on the water when I started my drive. Once the sun came out birds got busy.
During the period from approximately 4:30 to 5:30 PM, hundreds and more likely thousands of cormorants sweep in waves across the West Fork of the Trinity. Most fly is groups of various sizes; some fly solo. The largest groups appear to be combined groups and the smaller groups within the large group appear to alternate alternate at the leading edge of the V-formation.

I'm going to have to work on the cormorants. There are double crested and neotropic in the ponds I monitor.
