I think this colony of leatherwood was 'calling me'. Magnificent seeing fifteen large plants all in bloom. Many were taller than me. Growing amongst a copse of Bay Laurel but with some open north east sky. Fallen limbs and trunks from the bay trees all around. About 1/3 of the individuals were young and short. One group of three and one group of twelve. Surprised me to find dirca. I've only been looking for seventeen years in the preserve. It helps that I'm 'retired' and can go over all the land in the preserve multiple times.
Several patches of these found in the field to the south often near alkali scalds
About 12 plants on trail corner of owl alley and trail near pond
5 diseased on both sides of trail
I looked at all the Toyons on the side of the Chaparral Loop Trail and they were diseased. Most were growing under or next to manzanitas. The manzanitas were less diseased than the Toyons in some locations.
