What

Delicate Michaelmas-Daisy (Symphyotrichum laeve var. concinnum)

Description

Need ID review.

Notes from multiple plants in area.

  • Plants on mostly open to sparsely-wooded dry rocky slopes over mafic rock.
  • Plants (1-)2-3(-4) ft. tall, with stiff arching stems.
  • Upper stems, especially around inflorescence, sparsely pilose.
  • Lower stems glabrous, turning reddish in sunny conditions.
  • Basal leaves and lower cauline leaves often withered or absent.
  • When present, basal leaves (and some lower cauline leaves) are sheathing, with long winged petioles and cordate or truncate bases and heart- or arrow-shaped leaves.
  • Lower leaves sometimes irregularly toothed, and ciliate along leafy petiole wings.
  • Non-basal leaves sessile to subclasping, lanceolate or linear. Not petiolate at all.
  • Mid-cauline leaves mostly between 5-7 cm. long and 0.5-1.5 cm. wide, diminishing in size toward the top of the stem, with very small leafy bracts, sometimes adnate, amongst the inflorescence.
  • Non-basal leaves glabrous with scaly upper surface and conspicuously reticulate veins on the lower surface.
  • Non-basal leaves entire, sometimes mid-cauline leaves with fascicles.
  • Disc flowers yellow but turning reddish, and rays pale purple-blue.
  • Flowering heads 1.5-3 cm from ray tip to ray tip, usually 2-2.5 cm.
  • Disc 4-7 mm. wide.
  • Rays 10-15-ish.
  • Disc flowers 15-25-ish.
  • Phyllaries slightly pilose, mostly appressed but sometimes slightly spreading at the tips.
  • Phyllary tips green and sometimes with a purple tip, lanceolate-diamond-shaped.

This one has me stumped pretty good.

My best guess is S. concinnum, but that is not yet available on iNat.
