Finally!

I finally got my project up and running for Galveston Island State Park. It is just a basic collection project so I can get an idea of what species are being seen in the park and where. The goal is to use the information for presence/absence data and tracking invasive species. Those who follow me, please feel free to check it out and if you find yourselves on the coast, please stop by and contribute. If you're a regular to the park, please join the project. My sister @skwiffer_fish designed the banner so please send her some praise; I think she did a masterful job.

Hopefully, this will lead to some additional education and outreach programs at the park to get more people interested and involved. I really hope to make our own Bioblitz project as well, but I need to understand how those work a little better first.

I am probably just scratching the surface of what is possible with the data I could get from this. So, if you have any suggestions, recommendations, or anecdotes about what you have used it for, please share in the comments.

Traveling a Bit

Been on the road the last couple of weeks doing habitat management work, which mostly involved cutting down Ash Juniper with a chainsaw and prescribed burns, and TPWD's Statewide Interpreters Conference. All of which were extremely educational and a lot of fun. In addition to the job though, I took the liberty of identifying plants I was not familiar with and even a few I was, just to confirm.

I had never been to Balcones Canyonlands NWR before. Spring hadn't quite made it there yet, so most things were still winter dormant. It was nice to see the Little Bluestem slowly but surely winning out against the invasive KR Bluestem.

Even around Camp Buckner where we were staying there were a lot of plants to be found and the associated pollinators. This is where I learned that butterflies are incredibly hard to photograph. At least with a clunky iPhone like mine.

Setting a Goal

I started at my position at Galveston Island State Park in June of 2021 and have been pretty much collecting plant photos ever since so that I can get a species inventory going. I think I have been able to identify most of them accurately, but it never hurts to get a second opinion. That being said, my goal is to upload 1 to 5 photos a day until I get nearly all of them posted to iNaturalist.

Ultimately, I plan to create a project in iNaturalist to accumulate information from users that visit the park. It will be a Citizen Science type project so that I can track what plants and wildlife are being observed and where in the park. Can't wait to see what we'll be able to do with the data. If anyone reading this has any tips on getting the most out of a project on iNaturalist, please add a comment.
