This is smart. I wish I had your smarts.

I would like to find the low-hanging fruit in DFW.

I will try to be smarter. :)

I was working on a tool so everyone can have this data for their project... and got distracted by observations. Maybe today...

Publicado por kueda hace casi 7 años

Ok @sambiology, give this a try: https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa. @kestrel, @rebeccafay, @lhiggins: can you test it out too? If it's working I'll try and mention the other CNC project owners. The "Novel" taxa are pretty useful for quality control.

This is pretty awesome @kueda!

Seems to be working okay - I get the 404 page sometimes, but if I keep refreshing it, I can eventually get to the missing taxa page or the missing taxa of the particular project I was searching for.

Maybe I'm not quite understanding - if I refine by a place - e.g., Sonoma County, shouldn't I get a smaller subset of what's missing/novel for the larger CNC2017 SF Bay Area? Like looking at amphibians for the full project: https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa?utf8=%E2%9C%93&project_id=11013&status=Any&commit=Get+Taxa
and comparing that to amphibians when I choose Sonoma County: https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa?utf8=%E2%9C%93&project_id=11013&place_id=2764&status=Any&commit=Get+Taxa

And then when I search for a specific park in Sonoma, it doesn't seem to refine the taxa down - I know most of those birds don't occur in this park: https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa?utf8=%E2%9C%93&project_id=11013&place_id=3373&status=Any&commit=Get+Taxa

Overall it seems like a pretty powerful tool for CNC organizers/participants, especially for the full place of the project! I just want to make sure I understand it since I'll probably end up answering questions about it from some of the organizers.

The 404s are a total mystery to me, unfortunately. Maybe this just isn't ready for primetime. Setting the target place sets the "expected" taxon list to those observed in the target place, so if you set the place to "Sonoma Valley Regional Park," it will consider Cooper's Hawk to be a novel find b/c it's never been observed in that park in April but it has been observed in the project. This kind of made sense to me, but I guess it doesn't for everyone. Maybe "Novel" taxa just don't make sense in the context of a specific place. Makes more sense with the missing stuff.

Publicado por kueda hace casi 7 años

Ah, okay, I get it now. Yeah, "missing" seems more intuitive to me, and seems like it could likely help people figure out where to go to find taxa that we should be able to get. I still think it's a pretty cool tool!

God, you are smart. I hope I can be smart like this some day.

Posting it to the DFW project page. We just CAN'T let you Californians run away with this thing! ;)

Hope everyone involved is having a blast there in CA -- we're having some exhausting fun in TX! I heard of one father that fell asleep when his kiddos were searching for eggs -- he was out mothing too late. :)

Sam, please include the caveats above, and remember this is the work of a few hours while distracted by the flood of observations coming in, so there are bound to be more bugs. Also, this page is only available to people who are signed in.

All good -- I'll wait to share it for wholesale public consumption -- I did print out a list for my personal enjoyment though. I've got the species to hunt for the next few days! :)

Keep it up man -- lots of folks have been really enjoying this.

@sea-kangaroo and @randomtruth, here's that tool to find missing taxa we were talking about today: http://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa

Publicado por kueda hace casi 7 años

I can't believe that sharp-tailed snake is still missing. Someone needs to go to their backyard and flip some stuff.

Publicado por vermfly hace casi 7 años

@gyrrlfalcon @dpom @leslie_flint @geodani @vermfly Since you guys have been having your own discussion about missing birds for the Bay Area CNC, you could check out this tool that Ken-ichi made. Here's the url for the Bay Area project:
https://www.inaturalist.org/stats/cnc2017_taxa?utf8=%E2%9C%93&project_id=11013&place_id=&status=Any&commit=Get+Taxa

If you check out the birds that say "missing" - those are ones that we've had in the SF Bay Area in April, but haven't yet found for the CNC. You can also refine this by place, if you specifically want to see San Mateo County.

Publicado por kestrel hace casi 7 años

Unfortunately the challenge is over for me. I'm at work in Sacramento. I should have gone to Las Gallinas yesterday because there was a good chance for the continuing Harris's Sparrow, Least Bittern, Blue-winged Teal, and Ridgeway's Rails out at the end.

It would be nice if the tool could remove subspecies.

Publicado por vermfly hace casi 7 años

It actually should not remove subspecies, IMO, b/c the CNC count includes subspecies. If you're seeing some subspecies that look bogus, it's b/c we have overly-specifically ID'd observations from April in the past, which you could working toward fixing by finding those observations and identifying them at the species level.

Publicado por kueda hace casi 7 años

Ah. I'm thinking like a birder doing a big day again. A yellow-shafted flicker and a red-shafted flicker count the same in our "scoring system."

Publicado por vermfly hace casi 7 años

Well, if I had my way, there would just be no such thing as ranks below species, but unfortunately they have too much traction, e.g. with the Endangered Species Act. Lumping all observations of San Francisco Garter Snake with every Eastern Garter Snake would be hard to stomach.
