Diving in Cozomel

Another destination to cross off the bucket list. Enjoyed my diving here and added the endemic Splendid Toadfish to my life list but I did feel that the quantity of marine life here seems less than the other Caribbean islands I have visited. On the last day my camera gave up so will have to indulge myself by getting a new one before my trip to Egypt at the end of July.

Still working on the photos from Bali at Christmas so may be a few weeks before I start adding my observations from Mexico.

Back from Indonesia

Having spent a month in Indonesia, I am finally back in the UK. It has been a fantastic trip with ten days diving in the Komodo National Park and ten days in Bali. Lots of interesting marine life from the beautiful mantas to the fascinating Flamboyant Cuttlefish and the weird Paddleflap Scorpionfish. As I took a lot (!) of photos it is going to take me some time to add them but I know I will enjoy reliving those moments.

Madeira 2016

I couldn't wait to go diving again so we sneaked in a week in Madeira in September. We dived with a small centre Explora Divers based in Funchal. I was surprised at how varied the marine life was and how plentiful. It seems to be the further east for some hardy Caribbean species whilst still finding Atlantic species so an interesting mix.

Egypt 2016

I have finally finished posting my observations from my trip to Egypt in July/August - phew!

We spent a week in the northern Red Sea on a liveaboard diving the famous wrecks but also seeing lots of marine life. The second week was chilling out south of Safaga at Gassous Bay diving the house reef and making a few short excursions. The most amazing was encountering a whale shark just of the shore. Unfortunately as it was going like a rocket the photographs aren't very clear but at least I have a silhouette!

Back from Bonaire

Back home now after an enjoyable trip to Bonaire - great to get away from the English winter. As it is only my third trip to the Caribbean I am still honing my id skills on a new set of fish but find it was fascinating that although the reefs are full of fish the biodiversity is much more limited than in the Indian or Pacific areas. Some old favourites just don't occur here like anenomefish and fusiliers whilst there are others which are not found outside this area.

They are doing a lot of work to restore the staghorn and elk coral destroyed by the hurricane and there are interesting structures for the coral nurseries on some dive sites.

I did see some of the invasive lionfish although most of the ones I saw were juveniles and did my bit for conservation by having a lovely meal of lionfish in a white wine sauce.

2016

This year has seen me reduce my working hours so after many years I finally have some free time outside the precious annual holiday weeks. Having spent Christmas in Bali, I will be travelling more this year and doing more diving and fish spotting. The next trip is next week to Bonaire in the Caribbean, so I will find out if it really lives up to it's name as "divers paradise".

The next scheduled trip is in July back to my old favourite of the Red Sea. Despite the press coverage, the Red Sea area still feels very safe when you get there and is still the number one destination for UK divers. I have got a week on a liveaboard visiting many of the famous wrecks in the North Red Sea and then a few days chilling out in a small resort with a lovely house reef.

We liked Bali so much that we are going back there for Christmas and New Year again but first we are taking a liveaboard trip around the Komodo national park.

I am hoping to sneak some more dive time in by visiting friends who have just bought a house in Spain, I'm sure they won't mind ....
