Chestnut Hill Reservoir

I began my nature walk at around 2:50 pm. The weather outside was partly cloudy and about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. I started by walking down the left side of Chestnut Hill Driveway. Pretty early into my walk, I came across a very large mushroom. Even though the theme of this nature was plants, this mushroom just really stood out amongst all the surrounding plants. I continued to walk down this road until I ended up at the Chestnut Hill Reservation. I found a few different plant species here. I was surprised by the variety of leaf shapes and plant sizes in the area. From the Chestnut Hill Reservation, I walked onto the reservoir trail. I found a few more plants that stood out, most notably the Staghorn Sumac which was much taller than the other plants, with distinct leaves.

Chestnut Hill Reservation

I started my nature walk at around 5:40 pm. When I got outside the temperature was about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. I began to walk towards the Chestnut Hill Reservoir because I want to explore the Chestnut Hill Reservation that I had been to a couple of times before. Once I reached the reservoir, I decided to walk down Chestnut Hill Driveway. I knew there was plenty of wooded area along the side of this road so I figured I may see some fungi before I even reach my destination. About 5 minutes into my walk, I spotted mushrooms growing near the base of a tree. After I found the first mushroom, I couldn't seem to stop finding more. I was surprised not only by the number of mushrooms present in the area but by the variety of mushrooms. I ended up finding the majority of the mushrooms I observed on Chestnut Hill Driveway. The weather was great for a nature walk in a long sleeve shirt and pants. The one complaint I would have about this walk is the number of flies that kept bothering me. I was getting swarmed by mosquitos on Chestnut Hill Driveway. Then, I was walking through huge swarms of gnats near the reservoir. Other than the flies, I was very satisfied with this walk. I did not think I would be able to find so many different species of fungi. And I was even lucky enough to catch a squirrel and a bee on camera to add some more biodiversity to my observations. I finished my nature walk at around 6:15 pm. At this point the sun was setting so I made my way back to my room.

Hammond Pond

I set out on my walk at about 5:30 pm. It was rather chilly today with temperatures in the low 60's. However, I was glad to make the walk to Hammond Pond. After about 2 miles of walking, I saw the water of the lake through the trees. Immediately upon arriving, I was able to notice a wide diversity of fauna in the area. Not only in shape but in color. As I continued to walk down the edge of the water, I saw purple flowers, white flowers, yellow flowers, and red crab apples within the span of about 5 minutes. I followed a hiking trail and continued to search for more new organisms. As I leaned in to take a photo of a purple flower I came across, a bumblebee flew right in front of me and started pollinating. I was even more excited about the bumblebee than the purple flowers. I was worried I may only come across plant life on my walk but was lucky enough to witness this moment and snap a picture of it. Later into my walk, I came across even more diversity. I was able to deviate from plant life once again when I found a few species of mushrooms off the side of the trail. For the rest of my walk, I continued to just enjoy being surrounded by nature. And on my way out of the park, I got to witness the sunset reflecting in the water. A wonderful ending to this nature walk. I loved the scenery but would have liked some warmer weather.
