10/19/21 - Houghton Garden

I went to Houghton Garden for the 3rd time at around 5:30; it was the nearest place I could think of and I was drained from classes. This time, I tried going farther into the trail. It was a fairly chilly day and the light of day was slowly fading, but I found that the cold was actually fairly relaxing. It was a fun way to destress from a draining day. I found various mosses growing on rocks as well as at the bases of many trees; most of the flowers I saw were wilting and/or dead already. There was an abundance of ferns growing everywhere along the trail, though I didn’t stop to take pictures of every single one. I think I’ll go deeper into the forest for the next nature walk, as I didn’t go too far because I also wanted to get home and relax.

10/6/21 - Houghton Garden

This morning I went to Houghton Garden again, this time in search of fungi specifically. It was quite cold and muggy when I went but in a weird way it lent itself well to searching for fungi. Revisiting Houghton Garden was a fun experience, and while it didn't wow me like my first time going, the peace and quiet there is still something to behold. There weren't many fungi around the garden; I could only find a handful that I hadn't already observed the first time, and the ones I did find weren't very prominent within the ecosystem. There were only sporadic patches of a couple fungi every now and then. Overall, I could have picked a better spot to search for fungi, but the atmosphere of Houghton Garden was too familiar and peaceful for me to pass it up.

9/29/21 - Houghton Garden

This morning I went to Houghton Garden on Suffolk Road near campus. I got there at around 8:30am and as such it was a bright, cool day when I started walking around. Before I actually entered the garden, I observed two squirrels around the corner of the street and managed to get a picture of one of them. The garden itself was incredibly calming and peaceful, and all I could hear was the chirps of birds, the flowing of water, and my own footsteps. And the occasional train passing by. In the garden, I found various species of fungi, trees, and flowers that I made observations of. I also observed a cricket that moved onto a nearby rock as well as a duck in the pond across from me, though I had to move around and wait for a bit to get a clear image of it as there was foliage blocking me from most angles. The general area of Houghton Garden is certainly small, but it has enough diversity to make the walk around feel longer than it actually is. Overall, I greatly enjoyed my time in Houghton Garden and would like to visit again when I have more time in order to make more thorough observations.
