My favorite class in college - long ago - as a bio major was plant taxonomy. I didn't pursue that as a career, fearing that I couldn't support myself so I went to grad school in natural resource policy, had several state government jobs related to environmental quality. Biked around the world. Got married. Had kids. Switched to teaching at the ripe old age of 54. Retired from teaching this year (2016) and am getting to do things I love. (Not that I didn't love teaching!) Pretty good with plant ID (hardly perfect), working on birds, getting interested in bugs, thinking amphibians are very cool, and planning to learn more about terrestrial gastropods and fungi (which are fascinating to me).
