Berry Springs Preserve Herps of Texas report, 17Mar2018

After an unusually warm afternoon with plenty of Gulf moisture in the air, a squall line of showers popped up and moved through the park right at sunset, so we waited out the blowing rain in our cars and started monitoring about half an hour after sunset.
The Blanchard Cricket Frogs didn't mind the storm and Ben caught one for us before he was attacked by some fire ants. The Blanchard's Cricket Frogs got up to a Call Intensity (CI) of 3 while we were monitoring.
Christie heard an American Bullfrog sound off a couple of times (CI = 1), but although we didn't get a recording, Mike and Mariah took a photo of one in the ditch in the pecan orchard.
Two Rio Grande Leopard Frogs managed to elude capture, and we were not able to get their quiet, intermittent calls (CI = 1) recorded.
Bill and Jim were our stormchasers, the former keeping an eye on the radar on his cell phone, and the latter monitoring the thunderstorm's light show to the northwest edging closer; we could see its outflow boundary heading towards us on the radar, so we called it a night after 20 minutes of monitoring.
The monitoring period was 20:10 - 20:30.
Participants were Kathy, Christie, Diane, Alexis & Peter, Mike & Mariah, Jim, Holly & Ben, Carolyn, Bill, and Larry.
Environmental conditions at the main pond half an hour after sunset (shortly after the rain stopped):

  • Air temperature = 71.4 deg F
  • Water temperature = 69 deg F
  • Sky = Mostly cloudy
  • Water level = Average
  • Relative humidity at sunset = 69 %

Observed during monthly amphibian monitoring. Call Intensity is 2 in the recordings, but it was up to a 3 at other times during the monitoring. A squall line with blowing rain had moved through the park about 15 minutes earlier.
