The Value and Power of Place-based Science Tue 16 August 2022 2:30–4:00 pm (online)

Citizen science can move mountains if enough people get involved. This online symposium will explore great global and local examples of powerful place-based citizen science and consider why this is the sweet spot for great science with communities.

When people are interested in studying their own locality, they are likely to do this more carefully and over long periods, because their place matters to them. If science can contribute robust methodologies and data can be FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable), results are likely to be meaningful to all. We can foster interest, understanding and stewardship of “Our Place” with good science.

This symposium invites people working with local Councils (especially BVSC), LLS, Landcare, NPWS, scientists, farmers, landholders and community members wanting to take their interest in nature and our environment to the next level. Discussion will include: What sort of projects are most successful? What is the value for NRMs (Natural Resource Managers)? Can we join up the dots by having common methodologies (e.g. Phenology) that can be replicated across the country?

Art Springs for Wildlife, Berry School of Arts, 29 September - 3 October

The festival Art Springs for Wildlife will be held at Berry School of Arts 29 September to 3 October. It was inspired by and organised by Julie Cunningham, local artist. She was so impressed, as many of us were, by the work of Wildlife Rescue South Coast after the 2019/2020 bushfires that she decided to put action behind her appreciation. She organised this festival of art, music, poetry, workshops for kids as well, wildlife talks and much more only to have to postpone it twice due to pandemic restrictions but Julie has maintained her passion to help support Wildlife Rescue South Coast. https://www.artspringsforwildlife.org/ Julie has created a funky website for you to explore the many offerings. Book in now for workshops. All profits from the exhibition and events go to Wildlife Rescue South Coast.

Drones for Mapping Ecosystems, watch now!

This once-only free webinar, Dr Karen Joyce (Technical Lead of GeoNadir) shows you how to use drones to map your local ecosystems.
As you already know, our precious ecosystems are under threat. Fortunately, technology is advancing to the point where citizen scientists like us can contribute to real solutions.
One of those solutions involves using drones to capture imagery of our local ecosystems.
Through the use of drones and the associated technology, we can contribute to solving the challenging global problems we are all facing.

Call-out to teachers to prepare for National School BioBlitz in Sept - free workshop on Thu 11 August 3.45-4.45pm

ACSA (citizenscience.org.au) has partnered with Planting Seeds (www.ps.org.au) and are pleased to announce their free workshop this week for primary and high school teachers who would like to learn how their school can participate in the inaugural B&B National School's BioBlitz (ps.org.au/bioblitz-2022) in September.

The B&B BioBlitz citizen science project in September aims to help threatened pollinator and plant species, and supports STEM outcomes. The workshop is this coming Thursday 11 August, 3.45pm - 4.45pm.
Register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeWUeG-RGbXOglYszu6t_hBYNUIxScOXZnoVVlgLEJh7qmx2g/viewform (Recorded workshop available on registration.)

Teachers (primary and high school) are invited to learn about:

  • How schools can participate in the inaugural National Schools B&B BioBlitz in September
  • Citizen science, which enables students to take photographs and contribute their observations to Australian and international biodiversity databases
  • How student citizen science data can help threatened plant and pollinator species
  • How citizen science links to State curriculums and develops STEM skills

The national BioBlitz will involve a lunch-time or recess investigative activity in school grounds in the first week of September – National Biodiversity Month. Students will contribute important data and observations on threatened and local species to iNaturalist and the Atlas of Living Australia.

The workshop will provide numerous links to curriculum plus Dept of Education developed resources. Participants will have opportunities for further research into local plant and animal species.

By participating in the BioBlitz, schools will have the chance to win Optus Smart devices.

The B&B BioBlitz is coordinated by PlantingSeeds Projects and supported by NSW Dept of Education, Australian Citizen Science Association and CSIRO’s Atlas of Living Australia.

Register for the BioBlitz as above or email info@ps.org.au

Crookhaven Green and Golden Bell Frogs update, are you interested in being part of CSP?

Message from Lucy Loft, Community Engagement Officer, Biodiversity and Conservation, Department of Planning and Environment

"I met with some of you earlier in the year to hear your ideas and feedback in regards to setting up a Citizen Science Project (CSP) for the Crookhaven Green and Golden Bell Frogs. Please see below an update on this project. With the launch scheduled in September 2022, I would love to hear your thoughts on how we can further partner to promote this important local project.

  • Jerrinja Wandi Wandian women and artist, Rebecca Williams designed a logo for the CSP - ‘Guardians of the Green and Golden Bell frog’
  • Due to a reduction in funding, Enhua Lee who manages the statewide GGBF Saving our Species Project has had to reduce monitoring of Crookhaven GGBFs from annual to once every three years. As a result, citizen scientists will be vital to monitoring this population and assisting in conservation efforts.
  • We are in the process of finalising a brochure and website for the Guardians of GGBF (GGGBF) project that will assist people in finding out more about the project and how to join using the FrogID App. The logo will feature on both providing an Aboriginal perspective on the Crookhaven GGBF and its importance to the traditional custodians. The logo also features as an icon for the Guardians of the Green and Golden Bell Frog group on the FrogID App which you can join (and start recording) if you are a registered user of the free app – FrogID.
  • We will be launching the project in September (in time for the start of the GGBF season) through various avenues including a media release, webinar and hopefully a face-to-face event at Worrigee Nature Reserve.
  • We could set up a Bushcare/Landcare session to show volunteers working in/around the Crookhaven Floodplain how to register for the GGGBF and use FrogID.
*It would be great to get some local frog enthusiasts involved to champion this project, if you know of anyone please get in touch." Lucy
