A missing species from our lists

After twelve months of intrepid iNat-ting of San Mateo county, this project can celebrate its first birthday next week with pride and joy. But, despite all of our efforts, there are some obvious missing species still. Most gallingly, I ask members of the project to redouble their efforts to find this species:

Periplaneta americana - American Cockroach!

Happy birthday to the San Mateo County Bio-Blitz: get outside and blitz some more!

Butterflies of San Mateo county, and those that are missing

I've been slowly working on a butterfly list for San Mateo county, primarily to teach myself something about butterfly distribution and flight timing, but also to accompany a set of lists of other taxa that Sequoia Audubon will be including on its website. Prompted by kueda's question on my last post here, and aided by robberfly (who loaned me the classic John Steiner dissertation, Bay Area Butterflies: The Distribution and Natural History of San Francisco Region Rhopalocera {CSUHayward, 1990}), I can now present a list of those butterflies which do occur in San Mateo county, but have not yet been represented in this project.

Two things to remember - First, I have NO IDEA what I am doing! I am still a rank beginner butterfly student, so please, correct me in future messages where I am wrong. Second, it strikes me that the citizen-science call to not fear duplication is especially fitting for butterflies, because of issues like fragmented habitat, flight timing, and multiple generations within a year. So please, always share butterfly pictures you obtain. But, three, be on the lookout for these species, especially, in San Mateo county. Local knowledge is power!

Missing Herps (Amphibians and Lizards)

These little lists of missing species that I've so far produced for Birds and Butterflies, are useful in many ways - principally in motivating people to go out, find, and photograph what's missing! Here's the latest one: herps of San Mateo. We've done pretty well with these groups. Seeing the California Legless Lizard is on my bucket list, btw. I've seen California Whiptail within yards of the county border in Santa Clara county...

Assuredly someone can photograph a Red-eared Slider 'round here!

Welcome Carlmont Students and Teachers!

The San Mateo County Bio-Blitz Project is delighted to welcome the students, teachers, staff, friends and family of Carlmont High School in Belmont. It is exciting to have so many new members who are adept at both biology and technology. We look forward to many more observations from you.

The Carlmont High School Biology Project is a sister project to what we are doing county-wide here: check it out!
