Dear Naturalist Community -

While we are observing social distancing and shelter-in-place orders, that doesn’t mean we can’t be a community still! The Board of Sequoia Audubon Society has decided to experiment with an online meeting this month, at our usual time of Thursday. We will start ‘gathering’ online at 6:30, with the regular announcements to begin at 7:00 pm.

This is an exciting innovation, and so it is appropriate that our guest speaker is @damontighe , one of the founders and core members of the California Center for Natural History, a collective of naturalists in the Bay Area who organize events to create communities of culturally and experientially diverse naturalists in our area. So yesterday this project passed 300,000 observations in San Mateo County! This is amazing data coverage - and with the current shelter-in-place order keeping people at and close to home, we are filling in gaps in neighborhoods, pocket parks, and industrial zones. Nature is everywhere, and all organisms are worthy of being recorded. Keep at it, Naturalists!

Dear San Mateo County Birders -

Today (Monday) is the last day of the City Nature Challenge. There are a number of missing bird species which, if we were not under the Shelter-in-Place order, would be fairly easy for one or two people to find. But now we are thrown onto our individual five-mile radius limitations (it is as if we've leveled up in a game!), so it is trickier.

Here are the missing birds (in a semi-taxonomic order; I've not yet memorized the latest AOU order):
