National Moth Week 2021; July 17th-25th

National Moth Week celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths.

“Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about, observe, and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighbourhoods.

National Moth Week is being held, worldwide, during the last full week of July. NMW offers everyone, everywhere, a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories, NMW participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe.

Whilst, from Asia, India and Hong Kong have been long associated with NMW, much of the rest of Asia has been poorly represented. Can you help change that??
If so, please try to organise and register a mothing event for NMW to take place over the week of 17th to 25th July 2021.

Even better - can you coordinate your country's NMW?
NMW is looking for country coordinators to help facilitate Asian and global awareness of moths and their ecological significance. If you think you can help, or would like to collaborate with NMW, please contact the NMW team.

Many thanks and happy (& covid-safe) mothing.

National Moth Week 2020 - Registration for Covid-19 impacted NMW now open

Looking for an activity that’s safe, fun and enriching for all ages while social distancing or sheltering at home?

The ninth annual National Moth Week, July 18-26, invites novice and experienced “moth-ers,” alike, to observe these fascinating creatures in their own backyards and contribute to our scientific knowledge as part of one of the world’s largest citizen science projects.

As people likely will continue avoiding crowds this summer to slow the spread of COVID-19 infections, National Moth Week (NMW) offers the opportunity to learn about nighttime nature from the safety of backyards and gardens; porches, decks and balconies – anywhere a light can be turned on.

100 species added to Singapore Moths project !

In the last post by Roger on 24 June 2017, Singapore Moths on iNaturalist had 138 contributors. 365 species and 2000 observations.

Today, 9 Jun 2018, almost a year later, we added 100 new species to the project ! There are now 239 contributors, 465 species and 3513 observations, that is an addition of 101 contributors, 100 species and 1513 observations!

To be able to add 100 species in a year is an amazing feat and it is only possible because of your dedication and contributions !

THANK YOU and let's see we can hit 4000 observations by end of the year !

2000 observations posted

Singapore Moths on iNaturalist is approaching it's 3rd birthday, and an early present is reaching the landmark of 2,000 observations.

A big thank you to all 138 contributors. 365 species documented - that's one every three days. Might seem like a lot, but I suspect there's a long way to go yet before we approach the true number of moth species that can be found in Singapore. Let's see if we can get to 4,000 observations and 500 species observed by July 2018.

National Moth Week is a month away - time to register your mothing events for this international focus on moths and the effort to raise public awareness of, and interest in, moths. An opportunity to significantly add to the 2000 Singapore moth observations, too.

Here's to the next 2,000 observations . . .

Singapore Moths Guide

Great Work by Jit-Leang Foo, Craig Williams, and CheongWeei Gan.
There is now a guide to Singapore moths on iNat.

This should greatly help with the identification of the species.

many thanks.

This year, National Moth Week will spotlight the Sphingidae family of moths found throughout the world commonly called hawk moths, sphinx moths and hornworms.

Please get out and record moths for NMW 2015, then submit the data here.

Even better, please coordinate an event and register it for Singapore at http://www.nationalmothweek.org/ and let me know so I can get more people involved (if you want that!)
