I guess that I am only aware of this paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3689140/ where all of the variation was lumped into the species S. u.
I propose to discuss where the discussion is: https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/614651
I am going to have to look into this a bit deeper because the entity that we call S. tenuilobatum is quite different that what we recognize as S. u. in our region. I am a bit concerned that all of the Solanum taxa in our region i.e. S. parishii, P. xanti, etc. have been proposed to be lumped into S. u. and I am not sure that is doing us any favors taxonomically in Southern California where there appears to be a lot of diversity and also a lot of variation in the species.
