Hello all,
Just wanted to gauge if there would be any interest in meeting up and hunting some galls together. I am thinking a fall time frame (maybe early September)... in a central-ish location (perhaps some post oak sites in central Ohio).. I realize this wont be convenient for everyone... and if those that are interested are all in one corner of the state I am open to other suggestions.
Tagging people who are on the ohio gall leaderboards
@kemper @cladonia_chris @edisoncigany @erin2003 @leezeca @lo-am @schurchin @whateverwatcher
@chelsealynne @rogue_biologist @srmyers @rcurtis @bwhiteley @maryehunt @mmnat @bunnymom20 @greenscenery @kristendiesburg @argentacer @emerlee
I have already hunted with a few people on this list and always have a great time. Feel free to tag others who may be interested.
Let me know in a comment or DM if this is something you might be interested in.
Best,
Tim

I won't be here in early September :(, I'll be in Germany still (until the 28th of Sep). But I'd be glad to join in spirit by looking for what I can in the European gall fauna while I'm abroad!
Sounds like a blast!
I would love to, but I don't have a driver's license so it's not really a possibility for me at the moment. I should have one by summer of next year, so if you decide to meet up again please let me know and I'll try my best to be there.
I would be down for a meetup!
I am open if available. Some of us NE Ohio folks may be able to pool. What are the leaderboards you speak of? I don’t see a gall project for Ohio, but since you have taken the time to make such a great list, perhaps there should be a collection project.
Sounds like fun!
I'm interested! It does sound fun.
I would love to go gall hunting again! Would it be ok if I shared this event with the botany and entomology clubs at OSU? I think it would be a great opportunity to teach people about galls!
@rcurtis I just looked at the leaderboards for the four biggest gall groups
Oak Gall Wasps - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=31&subview=map&taxon_id=205775&view=observers
Gall Midges - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=31&subview=map&taxon_id=322033&view=observers
Gall Mites - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=31&subview=map&taxon_id=55584&view=observers
Gall Aphids - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=31&subview=map&taxon_id=125165&view=observers
We probably could make a project that lumps all these together and add a few of the common groups that dont fit in any of these categories, most non-aphid hemipterans (Phylloxera, Pachypsylla, etc)
@edisoncigany yes feel free to share, I will get together some more specific details soon.
Definitely interested! I'll be recovering from surgery Aug 15-Sept 15 so can't do that time frame, but if it's before or after that I would love to. I don't mind traveling an hour or two also (from Athens area).
That sounds great! Keep me posted!
