I love our Dallas park systems, especially those featuring prairie remnants. I get out to stretch my legs and look at flora and fauna as often as I can!

My current interests center around preservation of prairie remnants in urban areas, with a particular interest in habitats associated with shallow limestone soils. As a long term goal, I hope to be involved in projects that impact my immediate community, as I'm lucky to live in the midst of several expansive park systems that contain remnant land.

This past year, I've located several previously undocumented prairie remnants in my urban area, including a beautiful woodland area with old growth chinkapin oaks (Quercus muehlenbergii) and a sunny limestone prairie remnant with an amazing wealth of forbs. Perhaps because I've previously worked as an archivist, I also enjoy researching past land use and understanding how previous peoples might have interacted with - and impacted - the land. This has helped me understand where and why I might come across remnant patches in otherwise disturbed areas as well.

I'm learning my way around identifications. If you are somebody who helps the community with regular identification and you've landed here, thank you for contributing this way. It is much appreciated.

A few goals as I approach my third year on iNat

This year, I'm hoping to:

  • Explore more remnants via cycling, as I get back into this after a tendon-injury-induced hiatus (but hey, that's how I got into plant IDs to begin with!). Goal is to get back into 20-mile loops - there are a lot of remnants along our trail systems I can visit this way!
  • Become better adept with grass identification, particularly Tribe Paniceae.
  • Visit a few remnants out of my comfort zone - I want to stumble upon Pediomelum, Baptisia, and Delphinium in particular
  • Participate in citizen science efforts to collect and ID undescribed gall wasps, if funding is in place with the universities that have previously participated in these efforts
