Bee and Wasp Stats Winter 2023

Notes: E. US = Eastern United States, N.E. = Northeastern United States and Canada, N.A. = North America which includes US, Canada, Mexico, and Central America on iNat. Stats were calculated in Explore while logged out with filters: Verifiable and Has Photos, and percentages were rounded to the nearest whole number, on 2/27/23.

Highlights: There recently has been a much higher North American and especially Eastern US percent of bumble bees Research Grade, with Eastern US having 93% RG currently. Great job everyone.

93%, that's higher than I would have thought, do you know what it was last year at this time?

No, but recorded that Bombus in part of upstate NYS was 88% RG on 6/5/22, and that bees globally were 54% RG on 10/18/22, which also went up slightly since. My impression is more Bombus observations became RG recently, not only from the past year but also older ones that were waiting to become RG, and this might be the highest percent eastern US Bombus RG in recent years.

Given the difficulties in reaching high RG percentages on this website, I consider 80-90% RG the equivalent of an A grade, 70-80% a B, and 60-70% a C, so any above 90% are more like 100% and that percent can be hard to maintain. Many other taxa are still between 50-60% RG. Also, another highlight not shown here is that Apis mellifera is currently approx. 100% RG (99.8%).
