Habitat: at least one or two freshwater interdunal swales, the unique habitat in which this species occurs. Photuris salinus may be locally sympatric at some sites, but did not seem to be present here.

Flash pattern: bright green (not yellow) double flash less than a second apart with intervals of four or five seconds. This flash pattern is distinctive for bethaniensis. Nearby individuals were giving single green flashes at similar intervals, this is a known behavior of bethaniensis as well. Out of several dozen individual fireflies around none were giving a yellowish flash nor a series, nor anything else suggesting anything but bethaniensis. Photuris salinus is described as having a yellowish flash given once every second in a series. Despite attempting to locate a salinus I did not see any candidates at this site.

Appearance: small photuris at about 10mm long. First four sternites brown to blackish in coloration, just the trailing edge of 5th pale and 6th and 7th of course completely pale. Elytra dark brownish to black in coloration with whitish-yellow oblique bands running 3/4 the length of the elytra. The black maculation on the pronotum enlarges towards the apical margin but does not reach the edge, according to description this differs from other photuris.

Habitat, flash pattern, and all physical features are consistent with diagnostic criteria for bethaniensis.

Same site as observation by Aaron Reb.

Habitat: freshwater interdunal swale, the habitat this species specializes in.
Description: double green flash characteristic of this species. Double flash repeated every 4-6 seconds. Flash is often longer than the pause between flashes, unlike P. fairchildi. 2 males were caught and photographed. Will upload them separately.
Only other firefly species noted at the site was P. salinus but only 1 individual was found. P salinus gives a yellow flash every second in a series, but this was not observed in any bethaniensis.
Second image is condensed from a video of 2 flash series

Black marking on pronotum widens towards the apical margin but does not reach it, which is apparently unique to bethaniensis. About 10 mm in length. Sternites 1-4 are black, trailing edge of 5 is white and the entirety of 6 and 7 are white. This differs from P fairchildi in that in P fairchildi S4 is almost always partially white.

A fungus native to Australia though recently introduced to the US, Entomophaga praxibuli, commonly infects grasshoppers. The grasshopper accidentally triggers the fungus to shoot spores out from the soil using hydrostatic pressure. A spore landing on the grasshopper uses enzymes to break through the exoskeleton. The fungi alters the behavior of the infected insect such that the insect will aid in the fungus’s distribution. The fungal hyphae which grow into the brain and nervous system stimulate the insect to climb and die in an aerial situation, ideally suited for spore dispersal.

In this instance, as the grasshopper approached death, it climbed up a tall goldenrod, gripped, and perished.

There may be another similar fungus which is specific to this situation, but it's still seriously cool.

viper crossing road in mid-afternoon, so our van of birders & mammal-watchers stopped to photograph (first shot). Then someone looked over the edge of the road downhill into a culvert, and we saw several vipers together -- possibly in a "denning" behavior that some rattlesnakes in the USA adopt in winter -- but none of us knew that much about Asian snakes (we assumed these were common adders). I photographed one of these that was more in the open (second photo).
