Now this was a bit of a surprise.
Swam out when I lifted a rock. It then tucked into a space nearby. Very weird things. Habitat shot last. That's the spot he was in before I flipped the rock.
~4cm long

McLay's Crabs Of New Zealand says Petrocheles spinosus is grey with bluish tinge and has four stout spines on the inside of the carpus and tubercules on the claws (paraphrased), whereas Petrolisthes novaezelandiae is reddish, or greyish with red spots, two spines on inside of carpus (although they don't show in the illustrations). This seems to have the tubercules of one and the colour and spines of the other. I think this is closest to Petrolisthes novaezelandiae but I struggle to tell them apart.
