Observation is for the creepy crawlies all over this gator's mouth. (But take a nice look at those pearly-white teeth while you're at it!)

I had never seen a clawed frog larger than a couple inches. This monster was approaching 6 inches. I suspected it was a clawed frog at the time, but I really didn't know because of the size. In hindsight, I probably should have brought it home to live in an aquarium. It may have grown so large by feeding on the other amphibians in this playa.

Found this specimen a while back and thought it looked really odd for A. americanus (Hence why I photographed it). Coming back to it now with a bit more knowledge I can see it shows structural characteristics more like the Canadian Toad--Two closely-raised ridges between the eyes forming a blunt crest. The wart and colour patterning also look different and give off a slightly different impression.
That being said, I still have little-familiarity with this species. Plus these aren't known from here in Ontario. Looking forward to any thoughts and input

Exciting stuff! Two adults and a subadult tightly rolled up in duff under a stone, all three of whom refused to uncoil for me. A nearby board yielded a third adult who was kind enough to move around a bit.
