NOTE

• upper stem is obviously pubescent (1st photo)
• Ray Flowers not faded (1st photo), are intense yellow
• stem leaves are petiolate (photos 2, 3, 4) especially so the lower down the stem one observes
• stem leaves are pubescent, if minutely and sparingly so (photos 2, 3.) Strain your eyes.
• persistent basal rosette of large, toothed leaves
• on sandy alluvium

The shrouds have dropped and the caps have raised.

The patch I photographed yesterday were next to a Deer trail, and this afternoon only one stub of a stem remained, the rest presumably devoured by the Deer. Fortunately, yesterday, I espied this separate group up the steep slope away from the Deer trail, and obscured from above by an overhanging root.

Inat is suggesting Phegopteris hexagonoptera yet there is clearly a lack of connective tissue between the two lower sets of pinna. Perhaps I'm missing something. Found with 4 other individuals the same.

Upon upload of the first photo, iNat suggested this identification. It does appear to be a good match.
