This butterfly did not want anyone getting close
Found the specimen setting on rocks near stream leading to the Wichita river after day rain. The butterfly had long black markings where the bottom lobes of the wings were black. The wings them self had jagged edges from these findings. I believe this butterfly to be part of the family Nymphalidae and the genus polygonia. This species is known to live in cities with open spaces near trees.
I saw two individuals but was only able to photograph one. The other was distinctly darker on the lower wings and was in better condition. Please help distinguish between comma and question mark. I have not observed these species before. They are nectaring on roughleaf dogwood.
