Description

I do not know what kind of insect made this small, round mud nest. Most of our mud dauber nests are long and thin, often with several cells lined up in a row. UPDATE: Figured out this is a potter wasp's nest, but what kind of potter wasp? UPDATE: My guess is Eumenes fraternus. I saw one gathering mud in my front yard today, identified, and looked up pictures of its nest. They matched.

Picture 1 has been cropped to exclude one of these two mating flies in an attempt to get a different suggestion from iNaturalist photo recognition. Picture 2 shows the mating pair. After further reflection, I am now thinking this may be a stilt bug rather than a crane fly. @cgritz
