Notes: Cap convex to conical, 20-32 mm diameter, 18-25 mm high, pale brown with darker brown lines and shallow roughly circular lacunae up to 1 cm above the cap margin, margin crenate and incurved. Gills adnate to slightly sinuate, 5/cm, dark grey to black, two tiers of lamellules, margin finely denticulate. Stipe equal, 40-60 mm long, 3- 4 mm diameter, striate in upper 1 cm, pale to dark brown, hollow, flesh red/brown.

Notes: Cap dome-shaped, 9-19 mm in diameter, pale brown, smooth and moist. Gills pale brown, sinuate to reflexed down the stem, 8 per cm, 2 sizes of lamellules present with 3 between each gill pair. Stipe cylindrical, 10-15 mm long, 2 mm in diameter, brown with longitudinal striae, smooth, moist, veil remnants present. Spore print brown.
Vegetation: Annual grasses and herbs.
Site Description: Grey sand in full sun on the edge of the track.
close to woody plants, possibly mycorrhizal. My guess is that it's associating with chamise. There are a few Ceanothus, Rhamnus, and Quercus around but I don't think they were very close
The downside of living in the SF Bay Area: having to relearn mushrooms every year. At least I know a lot of shrooms it isn't. @damontighe.

Here's a 4" Russula rosacea or Rosy Russula, a spot of color in the dark forest on a gloomy day. It was growing by the path in a mixed-conifer forest, a day after a rain shower.
