Spotted a few things on my walk to the restroom today. Also, lots of mayflies emerged recently -- loads of them flying around!
primarily Brown -Headed Cowbirds with a few Bronzed intermingled. This is just a tiny sampling of the thousands gathered today in Kleberg County TX.
These plants have lobed bracts that are brightly colored, these are known as modified leaves. On this plant they are red when fully matured and pink when growing. These are surrounding the actual flower that is densely packed in the form of a spike. They are herbaceous and angiosperms.
Fun fact: quail grass is actually edible! This flowering plant (angiosperm) is part of the amaranth family and are seeded plants. They have 3 types of Celosia. This plant prefers wet climates and grows in the topics of Africa. You can see the brightly colored flowers almost appear feather like, they are very soft to the touch. The leaves show this plant is a dicot with wide lengths and parallel veins.
Went over to Cobblestone Trail Park -- been a while since I've been here!
