REFS Talk & Walk Schedule for Summer 2024

We have five "Talk & Walk" events planned for Summer 2024, to be held from 7-9 pm on select Wednesday evenings. (Except for the program on fireflies, which runs 7:30-9:30). These usually take the form of an educational talk on some topic and then a hike around the woodlands or wetlands to actually apply what was being discussed.

This summer's topics list is:

June 5: Lighting up the Shadows: The Secret Lives of Fireflies, Lightning Bugs, & Glow-worms
– Matthew Speights (7:30 – 9:30 pm)

June 19: Lichens of Northern Kentucky
– Kendall McDonald, Kentucky Nature Preserves

July 10: Latent connections between woody plants and amphibians at vernal pools
– Yingying Xi, NKU Biological Sciences

July 24: Exploring the world of ants
– Steve Yanoviak, U of L Biology

August 7: Algae.nku.edu: Discovering the wonderful algae at REFS
– Miriam Kannan, NKU Biological Sciences, Emeritus & Mark Nienaber

Appropriate clothing/gear: The wetlands is an open field with chest-high vegetation in most areas, some of which is spiny. The trails are mowed or bare earth, but are often muddy. Mosquitoes, ticks, and poison ivy are all common residents of the area. The river bank also hosts stinging nettle. While we aim to keep the Talk & Walk hikes not-too-strenuous, proper clothing will allow for more flexibility and comfort while exploring the area. Wear clothing durable in the face of mud and bug spray. Long pants will provide protection from aggressive plants and can be tucked into socks to discourage ticks. Waterproof boots are suggested if you can't stand muddy socks, otherwise, a comfortable pair of sneakers with good treads and a spare pair of dry socks should do.
