Macaulay Honors College and the New York Botanical Garden partnered to conduct a 24-hour BioBlitz as an opening event a required general science course for Macaulay's sophomores. The focus was mostly on the Thain Family Forest, a parcel of 50 acres that the Bronx River cuts through. This patch of woods represents the largest piece of old growth forest in New York City. Over 400 students got the opportunity to explore this unique habitat with a group of enthusiastic scientists and garden staff. We found 530 species, not counting the microbial analysis conducted by CUNY's AREM project. We expanded on the success of the 2013 Central Park BioBlitz as a transformational educational experience.
We also collected data on paper data sheets (that's why the numbers above differ from the project stats). For full results, go here: https://eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu/bioblitz/2014/09/22/2014-nybg-bioblitz-data/
