Join us for UC Berkeley Sagehen Creek Field Station's first BioBlitz, Saturday, July 11- Sunday, July 12, 2015, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the University of California Natural Reserve System!
Community partners, scientists, California naturalists and volunteers will work together to find and identify as many different species as possible within Sagehen Creek Basin – everything from ants to Lodgepole Pines. We’ll break the Reserve up into zones and may even encourage some friendly zone-to-zone competition. Bring yourself or a group of friends! We have hundreds of acres to explore and yes, we will be handing out a few prizes.
We'll be using the iNaturalist app to photograph and geo-reference what we see. This is the first time in the Station's 65+ year history that Sagehen's plant and animal lists have been confirmed with actual, geo-referenced observations. So far, we have only documented 399 of 1366 taxa assumed to exist in the Basin and we've added a few species: 15 plants, wolverines and likely river otters. Check out our digital field guides to preview some of the cool stuff we might find.
We'll be collecting data in 3-4 hour shifts over two days. Whether you sign up for one or several shifts, all participants are invited to a BBQ at Field Station headquarters on Saturday night. Accommodations are available at the Station, there is camping nearby, or you can stay in Truckee, CA.
Don't have an iNat account yet? No problem! Sign up here.
If you have a smart phone, you will want to download the app for
iPhone or Android.
