Belfast Reserve, in the Auckland suburb of Hillsborough, is 5.6ha of mainly native forest on the edge of the Manukau Harbour. The main stream used to flow into an estuary and out to the harbour but this area was filled in when the two ends of Frederick Street were connected, and the stream now reaches the harbour via a culvert under the grassy picnic area at the bottom of the reserve.
Local residents in the late 1960s persuaded council to acquire the upper bush-clad area of the reserve, and more recently regular pest control has been taking place. The bush includes mature kauri, rimu, kahikatea and totara, mature European deciduous trees such as oak and plane, Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), and uncommon King fern (Ptisana salicina). Kereru, shining cuckoo, piwakawaka, grey warbler, tui, and silvereyes are regularly seen in the reserve.
The purpose of this project is to record the rich and varied flora & fauna of a small, urban coastal reserve.
