Shifting our meeting one week to the future

Hi everyone,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, our workshop this Sunday (the 25th) will be moved to next week, October 2nd.

I'm sorry to switch up on you, as I know many people were looking forward to this. Hopefully, you'll be just as excited in a week! ;)

Thank so much for understanding.

Zachary

September 25th - Condylostylus longicornis (again!!)

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

This week we'll be going back to our roots - Condylostylus! Last time we looked at these flies was December 2021, so we're due for another shot at 'em. Condylostylus longicornis is the most common species in the Southern US, and also the most misidentified. Our main goal this week will be to work down the number of needs ID observations of the species.

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

The Zoom meeting will open at 8 PM EDT on Sunday the 25th.

September 18 - Asemosyrphus cont'd

We're happy to announce another online meeting! This one I think you all will enjoy a lot. Here are the details:

This week we'll start off by looking back at the key to Asemosyrphus that I started last week and finished last Monday! Next, we'll review the identification of Asemosyrphus species just because we can, and look at some similar genera and how to distinguish them. If we have extra time, which I think we will, I'll be looking for requests for future meetings!! Please come prepared with some ideas if possible.

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

September 11 - !!!Asemosyrphus/creation of a dichotomous key

We're happy to announce another online meeting! This one I think you all will enjoy a lot. Here are the details:

A couple of weeks ago, I examined specimens of Asemosyrphus at the National Museum of Natural History fly collection and determined new consistent characters that I could use to make a visual key to the Asemosyrphus of the Americas. Since I already have the characters, a major part of the key-making process is done, and all that is left is to actually create it. So, this Sunday I will be creating this key live so that all of you can learn the process and also learn how to identify these flies at the same time!

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

The Zoom meeting will open at 8 PM EDT on Sunday the 11th.

September 4th - Erioptera ID

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

Thanks to efforts by @edanko, we have a very good outline of the species of the genus Erioptera in the United States and Canada. This week we will look at this outline, learn about the different species and their identification, and then put the information to use by identifying the Erioptera on iNaturalist. (yes I copied and pasted this paragraph from last week's post ;)

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

Please leave a comment either to let us know if you're planning to come or to subscribe to be notified of future events! Questions are also welcome.

Aug 14 & 21 - Observing flies

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

This week we'll be focusing more on the observing side of things, rather than strictly identifying. We'll discuss how to take good, identifiable photos of Diptera, including the proper angles, how to get close without losing the subject, etc. On the 14th, we'll work together to create a list of observing tactics including the noted things. On the 21st, I plan to be out in a local park, taking photos of flies real-time to put our effort to the test. On the 14th we will also determine a time earlier in the day on the 21st that will work well, so that those who wish to can join me in the field (online) to use our shared knowledge!

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

August 7th - Reading and comprehension of dipteran scientific material

We're happy to announce another online meeting! Here are the details:

This week we'll be looking at the Manual of Nearctic Diptera to get some practice reading serious material and being able to understand scientific keys that aren't necessarily user friendly. We may also take some time to look at more recent publications like the Manual of Afrotropical Diptera, which have keys much like the MND, but with illustrations.

Just as a reminder: our meetings are entirely informal, and everyone is invited to speak their minds and ask questions to the group. Participation is key to learning!

If you want to follow along:
