Ohio Gall Atlas 1.0
Ohio Gall Atlas 1.0
Still very much a WIP, I am sure that there are some spelling and host errors. I will try to update this a few times a year as long as I am in the state.
Here is the breakdown of current gall species # by county (only species included below). Including thanks to the major contributors to gall observations for various counties. In general thanks to @malisaspring without whom we would be missing many of the most rarely surveyed counties.

Some holes that I am interested in filling/would appreciate help with:
- Diplolepis galls – Prairie/wetland sites – Rosa palustris/Rosa carolina/Rosa setigera – if anyone is aware of any sites with high concentrations of these species, I would love to know about them. If you have a local patch go out and take a look for leaf and stem galls.
- Post Oak sites – Fayette, Clinton, Highland, Ross, Pike and SE Ohio in general. If anyone is aware of any sites with post oaks in these counties, LMK. There are scattered trees in SE Ohio, but I have been unable to track down a concentrated site. For the western Ohio counties, they are listed as native, but I suspect they are very rare outside the Darby Plains.
- Quercus falcata sites – if anyone is aware of any concentrated Q. falcata sites, I would like to survey them next year. I looked for them in Jackson County this year with no luck. According to herbarium records might be some good spots in Lawrence and Scioto counties.
- Are there any galls on Ohio C. laevigata individuals? – Clermont County Population. Found a bunch of galls on these in S. Indiana on my trip this summer, would love to know if any of them made the jump to the few trees that are native to Ohio.
- Less charismatic galls, blisters and bumps. Cynipid twig galls.
The following areas of the state need more surveying – NW Ohio-particularly rural counties, W Ohio (Mercer, Darke, Preble, Shelby), Youngstown metro (Trumbull/Mahoning), Belmont/Monroe county, Deep South Ohio (Meigs, Gallia, Lawrence counties), SW Ohio rural area (Fayette, Clinton, Highland, Brown counties) if you live in or close to these counties documenting the gall fauna in them would be amazing. I will definitely be hitting Fulton/Williams/Defiance/Putnum next year as well as Meigs/Gallia/Lawrence.
-An extensive spring phylloxera survey on hickory
