North section - 11/17/2023

Friday, 9:00-12:00 pm. 239 dead newts, no live newts
Weather: Nice, windy at the end. It rained from time to time this week.
Coverage: Jones trailhead to the second stop sign. I walked with Keith.
We documented 239 dead newts, most of them were fresh. At least 197 were juveniles, most of them very small. Only about 30 newts were found on the hill side of the road (about half juveniles).
Other roadkill: a slender salamander, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, camel and Jerusalem crickets, beetles, slugs.
Traffic - very busy! - 128 cars, 27 trucks, 2 motorcycles, 16 bikes, 4 pedestrians, 12 parked cars (1 car at the farther parking lot).
2 ladies stopped their car and asked us what we were doing - they were the first ones this year, and got a sticker.
A guy stopped his car in front of us, got out of the car, left his door open into the road, and started dancing in the middle of the road with the loud music.
My observations of the day - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?on=2023-11-17&place_id=any&user_id=merav&verifiable=any
Anyway, we're in newt season now, and need to do surveys regularly!

OMG, @merav. So many dead. It's heartbreaking.
The dancing guy sounds like a real weirdo. Be careful out there. I'm glad Keith was with you.
